Boho Wrapped Sticks

boho wrapped sticks

Wrapping sticks with string and fabric is a fantastic bonding activity for you and your kids! And, Bonus! You end up with a super cute decoration to add a little bohemian flair to your home.

After especially windy storms, my girls and I like to go for walks and collect sticks to use for wrapping. We walk around our neighborhood looking for long, clean branches to turn into beautiful works of art.

Some of the best conversations happen on those walks, looking for sticks.

There is something about being distracted by a mission and the calming repetition of walking in the fresh air that helps us let our guard down and really get into the “good stuff”. On these walks, we have talked about pressures with friends, growing/ changing bodies, and mistakes that we have made and how we can repair relationships that have been affected.

I try to spend a little bit of time walking with each of my girls so we have a moment to chat between just the two of us.
Back home, while we’re all wrapping the sticks, we have an opportunity to talk as a group since we’re all sitting together.

Talking with my girls is obviously the best part of making these boho wrapped sticks! But I really enjoy the finished product too!

Skill level:

Beginner

Sticks, yarn, sari fabric

Supplies:

  • sticks of various sizes but not too long

  • yarn (especially good for younger kids)

  • embroidery floss (the stuff you use to make friendship bracelets)

  • lace or other fabric scraps cut into long thin strips no thicker than 1/2”

Steps:

- starting at one end of the stick, wrap a piece of string (or fabric) around the stick a few times, making sure the loose end of the string is tucked in and covered as the string around the stick
- wrap string around stick, either keeping the string close to itself, or spreading the string out as you wrap to create patterns
- to change string color, twist end of old string with end of new and wrap around stick, covering twisted ends as you go

Uses:

Boho wrapped sticks look great thrown into a floor vase or as a colorful decoration for your mantle or bookshelves.
Use the sticks to make wall hangings or mobiles.
They could be decorations for a play tent, craft room or club house.
Place them into a potted plant for added support. (see below)
You could even use them as a “spirit stick” of sorts and have them be held by whoever is speaking during a family meeting.

Spend some time connecting with your kids and make some colorful boho decor while you’re at it!
